That sounds very nice and theraputic. It is amazing the effect that pond life can have on you.
As for the algae, well there are lots of chemical products on the market that you can use to keep it at bay. In my pond, I use the following bits of kit. A Blagdon weed controller which works by disrupting the calcium ions in the water and therfore the weed cannot survive. With this unit, it takes a while to get going, months, but it does eventually work, but it also has to be left on all year round in my opinion. Also I have my UV steriliser in the return line after the filtering unit. These two combined do the business for me. Last edited by justmicky; 2nd December 2011 at 08:48.. |

Algae.A unit with an ultraviolet lamp in is cheap and seems to do the job well. The water just passes through it and the lamp kills the algae.
I bought one here in France. 60 euros. |

If your pond is shaded by a pagoda then you prob wont get much algae to worry about..
Sounds like you have an ideal location for a fish farm...... ... |

Thats a good price, mine cost me £115. Of course it depends upon the size of the light etc. Although the pic shows an Evo 110, mine is an Evo 30 - 30 watts, this size is okay up to ponds of 30000 ltrs. The evo 110 sells for around £210 ish and will treat ponds up to a size of 75000 ltrs. There is also an evo 55.

Thanks for the tips guys. I am wondering if any of these units including the U/V could run off a solar panel and battery pack? What is the power output like on these devices?
At the moment we clean our spring almost every day and take out the weeds and algae by hand but it is a laborious process and dangerous because of the snakes which sometimes visit. The puff adders visit at night and the cobras can be there anytime. We have not seen any now for about a week. So the idea of using a U/V at source or just before the ponds is very appealing or one of the other units. |
