Horrible creatures monkeys but swmbo loves having her picture taken with them. [no other comment allowed]

Paul, wish I'd have had more time in Southampton but we were late arriving and on return we all wanted to get back to Leeds.

Yes, visited only one of the caves but we only had a few hours on the rock before the ship set sail and swmbo wanted to hit the duty free shops.

Spent 3 years in Gib, 1967-70 Don`t know about 40 miles of roads though, around the perimeter was 12 miles and over the top 3 miles.Used to drive it every other Sunday when the border in to Spain closed in 1968.
However I do know there were 26 miles of tunnels within the Rock, some would cater for 7T trucks.Had a tour of some with the REME lads.
3 years in Gib,can only remember 2, I wonder why?

You could be right about Europa point, as I understand its now full of houses.
Originaly a sports or parade ground, very close to Govenors Cottage the Royal Engineers base on the rock in days gone by beneather the resident infantry garrison HQ

At Govenors cottage was a concrete slipway where all the old cars which used to litter the streets ended their days
they used to be piled above the sea each day----allways gone the next morning!!
Probably rolling about up & down the med, getting crushed by the passing oil tankers

Paid many a trip to Gib in my time, over 20 I guess.
First time was in a Lancaster from RAF St.Mawgan in summer 1956
Reward for being a good RAF National Service leading aircrafts man for my two years
Went backmany many times with the Royal Engineers TA working on extensive fueling systems within the rock for ships & aircraft, working for the DOE with the PSA, contractors to the government you could say

My first thoughts in 1956, what an idylic place for children to grow up.
Warm sea water, even the toddlers swam like fishes!

Seems someone else has "enjoyed" enforced enlistment!
Must be a long time ago, forgot making the third prop as an SAC, no chance of getting any further.
Bait was, sign for 3yrs, longer training & make Corporal ----no chance I had just got married.

Sorry about that, back to Gib memories of 1956
Every bar had a lady in traditional dress on a little stage dancing the Flamenco,
Street Hawkers sold delicious cooked prawns.

Sgts mess close tothe Governors official residence at the top end of town,(not far to fall into bed!)
A stones throw further on to the graveyard of so many British souls over the centuries

Parade ground opposite HMS Rook RN is now a car park!
The Apes are now more of a nuisance than ever I found about 4yrs ago on a days visit

I think there is still a cricket pitch there. All the bases now are being centralised at DTC, I think rook is closing in a couple of years. Were you there when the power station in the rock was built?
