I have taken the inlet manifold off and can see the housing but i cant see if its cracked. Would the crack be very visible or just small?

There is alot of orange/brown coloured gunk in the top of the Y. Could this be from the coolant where the thermostat housing has been leaking?

Yeah, that could be it. To be certain though, it needs a cooling system pressure test.

If i have to replace the thermostat i have been reading that the front manifold has to come off. I know i will need a new gasket for this but do i need to use a sealant with it or do i just stick the gasket on as it is?
