Worth a go. I’ve just signed up for the AA so might as well make the most of my £5!

I’ve ordered a couple of the gates belts which arctic recommended, on the assumption that one will probably go the same way

What’s odd is that the belt was stripping, on the inside. So if pulley or tensioner related, I’d expect to see whatever is at the edge of the pulley to be chewed, instead the edge looked fine and the damage was working it’s way in to the middle (if that makes sense?)
Hi Eddie.
How old is the belt? is it new and if so was the right belt fitted PK5 has in five ribbed belt. wonder if a PK6 a six ribbed belt has been fitted so was hanging over a little and therefore started to strip, once it get caught it would carry on.

The thing is that if if you look at the first pic, it’s stripping from the opposite side than you’d expect it overhanging.
The car is new to me, and the belt looked pretty new which leads me to believe that something else has been going on, crank pulley, tensioner or perhaps alternator as mentioned by someone earlier.
It only started it after I gave it the first run down the motorway, giving it a bit to blow off the cobwebs as it’s been stood.
No undertray, so I guess something could have flicked up in a really random way, but a longshot.

I’ve ordered the belt you recommended (plus a spare) so we’ll do how it goes.

Yeah I understand! Something may be protruding? You can have a good look and eye up the pulleys to see if they are all aligned properly. Some people use a laser which can help but doing it by eye should be sufficient enough.

The marks on the belt certainly look that way. I’m asking the garage who’s removing the exhaust from my scrap car to also remove the alternator, tensioner and pulleys in case I need them. They’re definitely ok, so at worst I’ll sell them on here to recoup the labour.

Default Auixllary belts.

If you are replacing one then do the other as well. Better to be safe than sorry, I guess. I had one snap last month However that, I guess was because the car had been sitting for some time due to neglect, which was due to illness. I replaced both with Gates belts. Fast and easy job to do. One thing you will need is a very long 22mm spanner, as the tensioner is somewhat difficult to get at. Stay safe and enjoy York.

I didn’t even know there were two? I just bought two on the assumption that the first one I fit will be shredded again for the same reason…
Is the second belt for the steering, or aircon?

Hi Eddie
yes two belts one is for the air compressor.

The serpentine belt is for crank shaft, water pump etc.

maybe get your mechanic chap to remove the crank shaft pulley off the car you are using for parts, if its a good one.

Just an update, the tensioner was goosed so this was allowing the belt to move and catch.
£350 repair bill I could do without, but this is the path we chose…
