Just a quick reply whilst having my lunch, a better update later with pics.
I've got the front plate off, I could almost believe a mouse had settled in there!. Even some deposits that at 1st glance look like wood shavings, though I think they are shreds from the belt. The water pump is out, there looks to be a very small dribble below it, and I'm changing it anyway. The tensioner pulley is free (but noting the previous wear position) but the piston is stuck on its operating lever. Next job is to get that off. The amount of deposits I've cleared out is astonishing. |

If there are apertures such that a mouse could access the belt it may be responsible for or have contributed to your problem. Several years ago there were acorns and mouse droppings in the V of my engine. Mice also significantly chewed the soundproofing foam on the underside of the top engine cover. Fortunately they hadn't chewed any cables or hoses. I set traps at various points around the engine when I wasn't driving the car and eventually I caught them all. Needless to say when I am doing under bonnet checks I also look in the V with a torch.

I did use the term mouse nest rather jokingly; I'm certain that no mouse could access the belt area! Nor are there any remains, which I'm sure there would be considering the amount of use the engine gets. The pics I'm trying to publish should show the situation, though I'm having trouble bluetoothing them to the pc at the moment. There was one area full of black stuff, and what looked like wood shavings, but it seems the latter are actually fibre threads from the belt.

As the belt was broken, I was unable to check if the tension was correct. I removed the 2 parts of the tensioner - wheel & arm - and have cleaned them up. Gripping the piston of the arm with a large pair of pliers, I was unable to push it in, or twist it round, so I would say it was seized at maximum extension. I then put it in the large vice, and managed to squeeze it closed. The pliers were then tried again; I was then able to twist it quite freely, but unable to close it (as expected due to pressure). Obviously, I will replace this part.
More pics to follow shortly as I've now managed to bluetooth them on to the pc. I've managed to source a pair of complete cylinder heads, just have to have them delivered here, and order the other bits that I need. |

Hi Stewart,
From your description of the hydraulic tensioner I'd say there's nothing wrong with it. The associated pulley has an Allen head adjusting screw which, when loosened, allows the pulley to rotate eccentrically about its mounting plate. It's this setting which is crucial for correct belt tension and it's a real fiddle. Do you need a link to the INA instructions for this ready for reassembly? Simon

you dont mention the idler pulley . this takes the most pressure. be sure to renew everything whilst in there. make sure you get a good quality pump and new gasket. i put blue holymer on the gasket and the bottom bolt threads as some of the threads actually break through into the block causing leaks. i hope the replacement heads are good and that you dont have any internal piston/liner damage. mat at dmgrs spares does the gaskets etc. your biggest issue will be the condition and quality of the replacement heads , you will need to inspect and clean very carefully. im sorry this has happened to you and not the best time of year either , but it is what it is sadly. good luck stewart ...

Time for more pics, at long last I've sorted them out. I'll have to send them over a few posts due to site limits.
Pic 9 - the lower cover after removal. Some of the debris has dropped off. Pic 10 - the front plate removed, again some debris lost but still plenty there. Pic 11 - close up bank 1 side, showing where the belt has been scuffing it. Pic 12 - close up bank 2 side. Debris looks like damp wood, with mud? But I think it must be shreds of inside the belt? Pic 13 - More debris. It seems that Pic 9 won't load. Maybe later? Last edited by StewartIngram; 25th December 2021 at 17:41.. Reason: Pic 9 not loaded |
