A few possible causes radiator holed leaks, hose lose and leaking, thermostat defaulted to closed or water pump impeller degraded..

You could squeeze the top hose and feel if there is coolant in it..

Oh dear, Mark. I had that once in the striped one and it was because the garage had renewed the coolant and didn't follow MGRover guidlines for re-filling. All I did was to unbolt the header tank and undo the bleed screw. Raise the header tank up as high as it will go and fill until coolant came out of the bleed hole. I never had any problems after that. Hope all is well with it after your epic journey.

That's great news then willshot..

Hope that is the answer, does it mean the system is air locking or run low on coolant?

At garage now possible thermostat or water pump. Can't get parts until next week. Trying to arrange repatriation of car to UK through recovery. More important, got to get family home.

the belts drive everything else and the water pump.

So:
thermostat is stuck closed
or
water pump impeller has come off or is worn

My money is on a stuck thermostat

The same can happen from too little water, but you claim that is OK.

It is definitely not an air lock, as that would have worked itself out after a number of days driving.

Same could happen if you go slowly and your cooling fan is not working. But I noticed you said motorway, so if freeflowing traffic, you can discard that option. If in a queue, should be kept as an option.

The thermostat still seems the obvious to me.

Sorry to hear that, if it's thermostat should be readily available locally or remove it for now.

Hope all goes well for you and family..

Thermostats are a sealed unit on the v6. Unless you have one of Kaisers' of course!
