I can honestly say that in a decade I've only ever broken down completely once requiring recovery. Cost? £150 ish if I recall correctly: thats £15 a year for the last 10 years. Any other faults that have developed I've been able to get home with.
No surprise that my view is that if you maintain your car well, then paying for annual breakdown cover is more expensive than handling the rare occasion when it happens.

I've always stuck with the big players, the AA and sometimes the RAC. I've called them out a few times over the years. I'm no mechanic and when you have broken down somewhere it's great to have a number you can call for assistance and I've found the service to be excellent.
I have a 55 year old jeep and they have even been able to fix that at the roadside. In fact I've found they prefer the opportunity to work on an older vehicle as a change from the usual modern vehicles. Just remember to haggle the price at renewal, I've always found they will discount the renewal price so long as you challenge it, I guess they rely on most people just accepting the renewal price automatically. |

Have used autoaid for 20? years. Always got someone there quickly, repaid the bill before I had to pay the credit card, can't fault them.
They don't have any vehicles, just send a local recovery company. |

Eventually a Kairdson transporter picked us up, and transported us the 45 miles home. The driver lived in the next village to us. I suspect that Autoaid put the job out to tender, hence the delay. We were on our way back from France, and looking forward to getting home |

Another vote for Autoaid - £41.
Used them last year when my UBP failed away from home. Tow truck took approx 1hr to get to me in rush hour traffic and turned out to be one of the local companies who bill Autoaid direct so nothing to pay.

I get mine through our flexdirect account with Nationwide. £10/month includes breakdown, travel and mobile phone insurance for us and our 3 kids as they are still at the same address. It also then pays reasonable interest on the current account.
