Try removing VLC altogether and see if that sorts it - you can always try reinstalling later to prove a point. I prefer Media Player Classic myself.....

Media player classic is already installed, but it's nowhere near as comprehensive as VLC, i.e. it wont open half my video stuff...

I have had VLC installed for years, with thumbnails working, this loss of thumbnails only happened when I had a security update download from Microsoft recently.... grrrrrr.......
I can't go back as my system restore system doesn't work.....

Default Try this

Control panel, System, advanced settings, make sure the box is ticked for thumbnails and not icons.

Can you not get this window to open - as shown in Photo?

You can change your view option here no matter what your Folder Options are set to. If you cannot, then I would say there is a glitch somewhere in you OS, which in that case I would take it to someone who can fix it, (a repair) that's of course if you don't know how.

Although I could be wasting my breath - as I obviously was in Post #8.....

Hi Mangoman, I have a similar icon (not the same) that gives me similar choices, selecting thumbnails fails to alter anything, all the other choices work OK..

Sorry, that is for windows7, try this for XP.
My documents, My Pictures, View, select Thumbnails only!
If that does not work then you have a problem with XP. Suggest you run "system file checker" which should put right the fault.

Hi James
Go to start, run, then typecmd in the open box.
Then click ok to open a command point.
type: sfc/scannow.
It will take some time to scan.

you may have a bit of software which has tried to be default for your image files...

right click on a thumbnail, choose "open with"
look at the list and choose, (usually paint or photo viewer)
tick the "always use this program" box
hit enter and the pic should open
close it and go back to your list then try the large icons option
