Hi Andrew. Thanks for the info on the reason for the post only being in the Oversea's Section. I suppose you are correct that it may soon be lost, but look how long some of the other post's have run in the General Section. It does not really matter as it seems to have been picked up again after my post.I am off to Germany sometime in April next year, staying with my son in Troisdorf, near Siegburg, not far from Koln (Cologne), which is roughly halfway to Linz Austria. The distance is not great, but we find that the roughly 300 miles from Calais; we go by shuttle, the quickest way and most comfortable, is as much as we want to do without getting a bit tired, and therefore can i say 'accident prone'. We have done this journey for around 30 years so think i know all the wrinkles with the driving. We usually cruise around the 80 mph mark as this is the most economical speed for the diesel 75 i find,50-53 mpg.
I know we have an invite for a wedding in June 2014, but do not know exactly when,so will find out.
I think it would be a nice 5/6 day jaunt from Calais, and is pretty straight forward to get there.

My ageing Daily Planet tells me that Austria has many camp sites (over 400). But don’t expect to find one in the centre of the cities.

Why not contact the organizers or email the Linz Tourist Office -
[email protected]

Facilities in some sites are good, laundry facilities, writing area, on-site washing machines etc. I once met an American Naval Commander and his family (then stationed in Scapa Flow, Scotland) in Florence. Though he had the means, it was his family’s preferred means of accommodation. Rather than being housed in an hotel with American tourists, he preferred to rubbed shoulders with the local holiday makers – many patronized camping grounds. You learn about interesting places that are off the tourist route, and the diversity of people makes ones holiday more interesting.
Hope you can attend, and enjoy this meet.

Any one in the northern half of the country might want to think about the ferry across the North sea , my route planner says Amsterdam- Linz is 611 miles and 9 hours driving , compared to Newcastle upon Tyne - Dover - Linz , 1089 miles and 16.38 hours driving .

Newcastle to Dover is about 6&1/2 to 7 hours in the car, have done the return a few times after dropping the coach there, so you're idea of the ferry is a certain shortcut Jon. I haven't got a passport and have never driven abroad, so couldn't do it.

Me and my better half were also very enthousiastic!
We had visions of a convoy from Rotterdam or Calais to Austria but now I have read the PDF files... and saw the prices.

Did anyone read the attached PDF files at all or am I just being Dutch here?

Yes I read the PDF files and promptly dismissed the idea at those prices...it appears it is all or nothing and you don't have the opportunity to opt out of any of the excursions. If there was the option to just turn up at the meeting and organise camping of less expensive accommodation then maybe it would be more attractive :-)
