Oh ohh!

I just read that and went back to the original post.
I thought the op had bought an after market radio not an oem one as I never saw the picture in his first post!
In which case disregard what I said about swapping the wires over as they should be correct and as pointed out the problem lays elsewhere !

It's not just station memory.
I have to re enter the security code each time as well.

The radio's internal battery is most likely faulty.

Replace your headunit with this.

Straight swap, no wiring to change.

I just heard back from the ebay seller, who wrote the following

Hi, The unit is not faulty. Its an easy fix. . The hifi has TWO lives and they both need to be on to work . one is permanent for the memory and the other is for on/off. the conversion plug you have may have them the wrong way around. swapped them around. so when you switch ignition off its actually switching off the memory live . the hifi will hold is memory from the other on/off live but only for a short time. try swap the lives.

Yeah I know, but I thought I had nothing to lose.
I thought I ought to try it as per the sellers suggestion,
I swapped the lives over, and whereas before the unit held it's memory for 10 - 15 minutes, now it won't hold it in the time it takes to turn the ignition off and back on again.
What else can I try.

Send it back!
As Dave said, it must have an internal battery problem if you have swapped the cables over.
I don't know the unit myself but it will be likely a lithium solder tag battery or a capacitor battery.
Both of these are usually soldered to the pcb and would require re soldering of new battery!

Many thanks.
The seller just emailed me and has asked for the unit back to test it himself.
If he get's the same results (which he will), he'll refund me.
This is my first such experience on ebay.
At least it looks like I'm dealing with an honest seller.
Shame about the unit as I really like it,
