Yes there are many other things it could be, was just posting my experiences on the subject, which is after all what this forums about.
i have found that when we have had cars towed in with suspcted broken belts all the owners have said the had been a noise before ,possible tensioner slackened, very unlucking t0 not of heard any change in engine sound of any nosies at all.yes i agree it can be a broken belt but there are lots of other things it may too.i would say cam sensor has gone .camsor gets tdc from crank sensor and is responable for telling ecm when to earth the injectors, so no signal no fuel engine will stop and engine wont restart ...

A 2002 model is young enough to catch FFS. Lots of vibration in a hot tank may be just the trigger it needed. Definitely worth checking out.

I don't know if it's relevant that the check engine light came on. Doesn't it do so every time when the engine stops from other causes than normal stop by ingnition key ? OTOH, the ECU doesn't know if a cambelt snaps. Once started the engine runs with the camshaft sensor disconnected, it simply ignores it. Nothing else would tell that, excepting the syncronisation between the crankshaft and camshaft sensors and nobody listens the last one.
I want to be optimistic, check the fuel pressure first.

Edit: about your 14,000km and 19 months ago, there is no rational reason for a failure in their (I mean belts) area unless...
...both RAVE repair manual and the video we all know on youtube (not sure about Haynes) tell that the tensioner comes with a precise setting from the factory and the bolt that holds the eccentric core on the body should not be touched; I had the original new INA part and I could untighten it by hand, with no tools; it time it becomes more and more loose until the tensioner touches the body and stops spinning; happened before, hope it's not your story.

Actually it isn't. We should offer help and advise based on our knowledge, not fill the thread with other examples and stories of things we have personally experienced innit...

Then surely just copying and pasting the workshop manual would be better? Sorry but I disagree, real world examples are very valid and can help diagnose problems that don't necessarily fit the norm. I know on various forums I've found a shortcut to a solution by trying something that someone has already done.....doesn't always help but sometimes it does.

Too true, years ago I had an Audi that stopped and wouldnt restart, got all the horror stories etc.

Anyway, long story short, the cambelt was fine everything was fine except for a sensor in the gearbox that had been knocked off by a screw left in the bell housing from some dickhead changing the clutch.

It is not always the obvious!

And it could be something simple as no fuel, either filter or pump.

But have a look at it when tempers and the weather has cooled down a bit.

By all means push her over the cliff, but make it a very small one, like a kerb stone.

Better go and get a beer and philosophy on life. There is more to that than ****** cars and fast women!

But not much fun!

I rather think you need to speak to this man
Since there is a distinct lack of MGR garages, in your vicinity you might find Bruce can point you in the right direction, he might even T4 your car if you ask nicely
