Just an FYI. There is a loophole in the upgrade process that allows you to upgrade even an illegal copy of Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro for just £14.99. As long as the upgrade assistant doesnt flag it while checking your compatibility, it works.

If you really hate the new interface you can hide it using Stardock Start8, which is about £3. It restores the start menu (pretty much) and boots you directly into the desktop, but still allows you to get to the new UI when you want to.

I gave metro a go for a couple of days but ended up with start 8. As you say, it is possible to set it up pretty much as you wish.

I knew this before installing it knowing i could make it how I like. I think maybe Microsoft should have done this. I think I read you could do a simple registry edit in the beta versions to get the start menu. Should be good on tablets.

You're far better off with Windows 7 or even XP in my opinion !

Windows 8 is mainly designed for Tablet/Touchscreen PC's & bears little or no resemblance to previous versions.

You can make it look like Windows 7 but as already said, why would you want to ?

Microsoft have lost the plot again (just like Windows Vista !!)

Im used to it now and find it easier to do everything than under previous windows versions. It just takes a little time to find the ways that work best. It is no way a mess up.

Its certainly faster than windows 7 and very easy to fix if you mess it up, which ive been deliberately trying to do on my spare PC.

I have unistalled Start8 now and have given Widows 8 another go. I seem to be getting used to it. I have customised the start screen quite a lot and it has helped.

Who knows how it will end up

Good thing is you can have your PC the way you want it.

I have gone back to using start8. The windows 8 interface is ok but I find it less intuative and generally too in your face. I had no problem using windows 8 as it comes but prefer the old 7/vista/xp feel.

I don't care much for the standard colour scheme either, although of course it can be altered.
