Very sorry, this is a thread for insults, not arguments.

As my nan used to say, if you can't say something nice then don't say anything at all.

I do think that support and encouragement was what you have been given, so your comment is a little unfair.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

I bought my 190 at the beginning of July as a project. It cost me £200 as a scrapper. I knew it had some bodywork to fix, nothing major. It also needed the thermostat doing and had previously been converted into a swimming pool. Both problems I have now sorted. So far it has cost me another £50. Not a disaster!

Thinking it was ready for the MOT I gave it a quick test drive. This revealed that there is a leak in the steering system. I am currently investigating, but I think it is the pump.

While stripping down to remove the PAS pump I can see the drive belt has cracks across the grooves. So that'll need doing. But if that needs doing, surely the timing belts do as well (I have no history of this car!).

The positives: 57k and generally in very good condition!!

So, before I spend quite a bit if money on pumps, belt kits, etc, shall I go on?? The way it is going it is beginning to feel like a nut and bolt restoration will be done. Every time I fix something, another problem is revealed.

Help!!!
Hi Jamie.

I bought a scrapper as a project for around £300 around 4 years ago. Spent plenty of pennies refurbing her. I've quite enjoyed making a car that was probably destined for the scrap heap into a good condition example that will hopefully run for a good few years. Sad I know, but it takes all sorts.

Please don't be too offended by the less positive posts. Most are not intended to upset, their just a point of view that's all. Not easy to get this across on a forum without it sounding a bit harsh.

I'd say fix her up. No doubt it will be a bit of a money pit, but there aren't many used cars that aren't and the 75's and ZT's are worth it in my opinion.

I would say, ask yourself if you are willing to put up to £3k plus significant amounts of time into the car to get it running really well. If yes, crack on. If not, move on and buy a newer, modern and smaller car.

In my opinion a 45/ZS would make a much better first project car as it is far less sophisticated and parts are considerably cheaper.

Surely an argument is essentially a bilateral set of insults most of the time.

I reckon I have spent at least 2 grand on Christine, including tools to be fair, I must have the right tool, since I paid 3 grand 10 years ago.
She has fought me tooth and nail all the way, but I always win eventually and I love her.
This IS MGR ownership. Accept the challenge, and revel in the miles you get of quality driving, enjoy the fight maintaining it too. It's what it's all about.

It's not just MGR ownership!

ANY old vehicle will need constant looking after, it will be a never-ending job. There will always be something else. But, that's what makes it interesting/frustrating. If you want something that actually works buy something much much younger and change it every couple of years.
