Update:

put the old cylinder on and now have a pedal again... gonna try a full flush of the system (10/12 pedals) pressing the pedal down slowly shutting the bleeding nip up then pulling the pedal up to fill the master with fresh Dot 4.. repeat another 2 times before needing to refill master cylinder

fingers crossed

I'm reading this thread with interest, as not by choice my current 75's are all autos, so I've not had any experience of the problems with manuals.

If the master cylinders for our cars are a weak point, is it not possible to modify a different unit from another vehicle, to fix the situation ?

My manual Discovery has done over 200k on it's original master cylinder, so they obviously can last if designed/engineered correctly

Equally, I can't remember slave cylinders being an issue back when I was selling these cars new ? So what's changed from the original design that's making some of the replacements so frail ??

Well my clutch hydraulics failed around 85k miles from new, then twice between 85k and 118k miles. It was a company car at the time, and so all the work was carried out by main dealerships.

Never had any clutch issues with the other company cars I had.

Never worn a clutch plate out though - the hydraulics don't last long enough for that.

Shame they didn't spend a bit more and had decent hydraulics.

Is it only the diesels that suffer ? Or do the V6's and 1.8's have similar problems ?

17 days my slave lasted, I identified that if the pipework on the slave is loose then its not going to last, air will be drawn in and you'll be forever bleeding it and wondering whats going on.
In my case it totally failed, I had to be recovered.
The slave was from dmgrs and was replaced with an item that has a 2 year warranty.
The master I have fitted is an ap one from the same.
At the end of the day the stuff is cheaply made with a high end price tag.

My 1800 has the original clutch fitted, as does the wife's diesel.

A lot of the problems are cheap components allied with poor fitting technique, especially Chinese slave cylinders.

While I don't intend keeping the wife's 75 past it's MOT, I will fit the AP Lockheed new old stock slave, along with a new old stock AP master and genuine Landrover driven plate and cover, once I remove the engine and box for it's upcoming transplant.

Will be doing mine again in the not too distant future - pedal went to the floor just before I got on the M1 coming back down South. The reservoir was empty, but it wasn't a sudden drop as it worked OK once warmed up for the rest of the journey.

The GhettoTech easy fill and view reservoir has been put in place so I'll monitor it for a bit to see exactly what is happening.

I will be trying reverse bleeding from slave end using home made pressure pump this morning saving me the hassle of bending down inbetween the pedals.. also noted that the bleeding nipple thread was leaking so alittle bit of plumbers tape was needed.

Should have a working clutch this morning
