Being quite a bit younger , I seem to remember paying around 84p a gallon when I first passed my test in 1984. My first car was also a Mini, a 1979 1275GT

When I first started driving I paid about 28/30p a gallon to fill my 1960 Austin Mini 850 in the late 60s. By 72 it was about 35p a gallon as I could also put £1 in on a Friday, get just over 3 gallons and that would usually last me for a week of normal use. The car I was driving then was a Fiat Sports Coupe. Petrol seemed to start on its upward trend after.

I still had the Mini but by then it was much modified running with a 1310 Cooper S engine with a split Webber 45, 3/4 race cam, close ratio box, etc. etc. and having moved up to an international competition licence was used in national rallies and local international events.

I passed my test in 1980 and remember the bloke at my local filling station in Marlow complaining that people wouldn't be able to run cars now that the price had reached £1 per gallon.

I remember filling up my Ford Consul in Tottenham and refilling the tank near Beverley in Yorkshire for £2.50.

I certainly do, it was a great little car but got plagued with electrical problems at the end so I traded it in for a 1965 Triumph Herald I had that Triumph for years.

Here's a list of petrol prices in £SD & decimal prices.

Interesting stats. The decade of doom was no doubt the 70's that started fuel on it's continual rise - 1972 at 35.25p per galloon but by 1980 it was £1.28 per gallon
