I had a private plate on our KIa (KIA reg) and it became a pain in the rear, every time we changed it. You have to have insurance and MOT docs showing the original numbers and then change them all over for the new ones. Drove me scatty!

I put my private plate on retention all through dvla website, as soon as the fee was payed i could remove the private reg and put original plate back on same day, put private plate on retention on the wed and the new reg document arrived on the sat. I wasnt expecting that, it seems they have got there finger out. Also noticed that you dont have to send away new keeper part of document, this can also be done online so the car is in new keepers name straight away.

I'll be honest, unless the plate was something like T0S 5ER I wouldn't waste my money changing it

I was amazed recently how quick it was to change a plate over.

Bought a 75 V8 SE with a private plate.
The owner wanted to keep it so I honoured my word after bringing the car back to Wales with his cherished number still on the car.
Back home I went on line.

Fee paid & his email was entered and within minutes from DVLA a retention cert was emailed to him.

I then waited only a few days then for a replacement V5 to arrive on my doorstep sent from DVLA to previous owner who then forwarded it to me !!

Granted that is not orthodox the way do to it but when both parties trust each other it is the quickest way.

If it was a purchase of a Merc BM or Audi, things might have been different as a lot of shady folk own those

Sounds the same as my experience, easy, quick and a piece of cake. I then informed the insurance company and there was no charge to change the reg plate.
