Could be a failing crankshaft pulley. They have a rubber interlayer which eventually perishes and causes each pulley half to clatter together under slow rev conditions. Hose it with water and compare. If it sounds different /quiet when wet, that's the culprit.

Expensive to fix.

Second guess - the engine lower tie bar has failed.

I think T-Cut might be right I had the same problem a few weeks ago the noise was worse when I had the A/C running due to extra load from the A/C motor, the crankshaft pulley was very expensive £240.00 plus labour!!! When I the garage removed the old pulley the front and back were in two half's, the rubber had completely split in two

Mine only seems to make this noise when under load and steering to the left. There is also a fairly loud whining when under load and steering to the left. Would this indicate something other than the crankshaft pulley?
