Are these things legal? For one thing you need headlamp washers and I'm sure there's other differences between aftermarket and originals. Just curious

There has been loads of discussion about these types of lights, basically, proper xenon projector lights can be fitted, plug & play,if you fit washers, self levelling etc, which were factory fitted, they must work or will fail Mot.If not fitted, you're ok with just the xenons. Now the hid's are a different kettle of fish altogether.

The MOT rules regarding HID's and Xenons are if the washers are fitted, they should be in working order. The car must be equipped with a leveling system, but unfortunately the tester has no means of checking if they work.

HID kits in my opinion seem to work better in a Projector lens, reflectors seem to spray the light away from the intended area.

In my opinion,if these kits are fitted, hide the ballasts and the additional wiring behind the bumper,so it doesn't attract attention.

Thought HID and xenon was same thing only different word for same technology, os so site on Internet state. Also see following

"In Europe and the many non-European countries applying ECE Regulations, HID headlamps may be installed only on vehicles (except motorcycles) with lens cleaning and automatic self-levelling systems. These systems are usually absent on vehicles not originally equipped with HID lamps. If a halogen headlamp is retrofitted with an HID bulb, an improper light distribution with illegal levels of glare will be produced and the headlamp's type approval or certification is no longer valid so the headlamp is no longer street-legal"

If you're fitting them into reflector lenses then they must be fitted with the H7R burner rather than the H7...which would cause the glare as described above. The H7R burners have tungsten shields around them to prevent this.

Unfortunately not. The earlier lamps haven't got the bayonet fasteners.
