I think, from what I've read (although I've been more concentrating on the pre-face lift versions) is that that answer depends on the VIN. Early face lift cars have the two pump system, and therefore the same pump. Later versions have a single pump and a different in-tank pump.

The one Pump system (not always on MK2 and on some MK1's.) is a completely different pump and also seems far more reliable than the two pump system.
Its also much, much more expensive.

I wonder if you guys can help me? I have a petrol 75 and the in tank fuel pump recently died on me. Instead of taking it to the garage for an extremely expensive job I got hold of a pump and sender unit off eBay. Fitted myself quite easily and the car fired up first time every time. I did notice however that the idle revs weren't quite right as they were fluctuating ever so slightly, around 1000 revs at first and in the following days between 1-2000. A couple of days after fitment the car idled at about 500revs which certainly didn't seem right. Then as I was driving the car just conked out with an engine warning light. Now won't start and I can't hear the in tank pump priming. I'm of the thinking that the pump I fitted was a cheap possibly knackered one and has gone again. Does this sound right or should I be looking elsewhere?

How did you know the pump failed? It's very unusual.

Almost everything you describe could be due to Fuel Filter Syndrome (FFS). It's a hundred times more common than pump failure but gives exactly the symptoms you wound expect from a bad pump.

Working on the fuel pump as you did can exacerbate FFS in the other side of the tank. It's the stiff pipes connecting the two that cause it.

Search 'FFS' for more.

TC. I'm assuming the pump failed due to the fact I can't hear it when power is on. I've recently hung one in and that has failed too. If it was FFS would it prevent the pump from priming? If so when I fit the magic orange clip would the pump kick back in?

Also with FFS will it cause the car to stop whilst driving or does it only affect starting. Many thanks for your help.

That's what I meant by 'almost everything'. If the pump doesn't start at ignition on, there's a separate issue. Check the pump relay in the passenger glove box fuse panel.
It depends on which type you have.

If the relay is dodgy, it might explain the earlier problem as well.

That really is a massive amount of info! Thanks for that. Got some hunting to do but it's nice to know where to start. I've ordered the orange clip and will fit it soon. I take it it just clips on and holds the filter together? I'm leaning more towards the pump not working due to the fact I've already changed it and it was a cheap eBay job, but I'm wondering if FFS puts extra strain on the pump?
