My temperature gauge always climbs gently to 9 o'clock and stays there all the time. It was still there when I had an overheat due to lost coolant due to a small radiator leak resulting in a new head gasket.
There must be some way to replace the present temp sensor with a better one attached to a decent gauge surely.

Yes there are some options, so I suggest you search this forum.
There is a new temperature display and there are ways of installing other gauges/sensors.
You are right, the standard system is absolutely useless. It might as well have been painted on the dial.

The standard temperature gauge stays on the 'normal' (9 o'clock) position at all temperatures between 75C and 115C. By the time the coolant reaches 115C, there's an overheat in progress and damage may be done before it moves any higher. As noted, the gauge has little practical value.
