The thing is I got so fed up with texting him I rang his mobile number and his wife answered and she was as nice as pie
In her words,"its a shame he loves the car" I even offered to take a look at it and even give them some money towards the cost of getting it fixed (within reason) as I know plugs are not the issue, nor is the cat, nor is the fuel pump ................ All I got off him was, "want my money back" He is coming to see me a 4 pm today for his "refund" so will let you guys know the out come later Looks like an ebay relist is on its way Be great if I could sell it for more money, maybe its on omen |

A shame you did not have access to a T4 Guru to be present when he arrives, let the Correct software do the talking.
I would still be inclined to say No ! At least I would calculate the 'hire charge' so he has not had free travel, also deduct the cost of sellers fees and re-listing fees otherwise he has taken you for a mug and you're out of pocket : shrug:

Do not even consider taking the car back and refunding him. He bought the car privately - with the as usual 'Sold as Seen' I assume. You can tell him his so called mechanic friend doesn't know his back-side from his elbow: fault codes don't mean squat unless you know when they were recorded. All codes should be cleared, the car ran/used and then the codes re-checked. (but I think you already have).
If I were the seller in this situation I'd tell him to leave me alone and not call, phone, text email or whatever me again - about anything - and that if he does I'd consider it harassment and report it as such to the police. I'd advise you to do the same. Quote:

Sorry Tidus but I feel you are being a bit naive about this.
He has added another owner to the V5C which means that if you try to sell it again the prospective buyer will want to know why it is now back in your possession as I would. He is just trying it on. He obviously doesn't like the car or it could be for the reason KC said. His wife could have been told what to say if you rang. Begs the question of how much he paid for it. He has no rights whatsoever to return the car especially after two weeks. He could have swapped the engine and gearbox and any number of parts. Tell him that if he really has a gripe about the car he should produce an independent RAC/AA inspection report and then tell him the old adage, "buyer beware" Some people are just awkward and think they can browbeat others into doing what they want them to.

If you have a mobile phone you can discreetly record any conversation and should he threaten you in any way then you have the evidence.

Sorry to post again but I have just re read your post.
"I sold my Rover 75 1.8t a couple of weeks ago and it was in fine fettle, the new owner messages me today saying he has taken it to the garage and his mechanic mate has plugged it into a diagnostic and come up with, engine miss fire, cat converter fault, fuel pump fault, oil temp sender fault, heater matrix is knackered and a couple of other things, and it needs new plugs, leads and coil packs ! he has only had it 2 weeks and managed 200 miles and knackered it up, now he is demanding his money back " His mechanic mate??? No conflict of interest there then.

I think you are being generous to a fault. I'd ring trading standards and get to know exactly what the legal obligations are.
He wouldn't be getting his money back without one hell of a fight if it was me. Once a car has been driven a couple of weeks I think you will find all your obligations in a private sale are waved. He should have had diagnostics done BEFORE he bought the car.

Another consideration that has been mentioned. You are now going to have a car with someone's name on the v5 for only 2 weeks. That could put a prospective buyer off. It would certainly make me ask questions.
I fear his 'mate' has said something or shown him cheaper ones. If you do reconsider, phone him to tell him now to waste his journey. Perhaps you have a mechanic mate yourself that could be there with you to verify his claims? If this had have happened when I bought my zt, there would have been no chance. As the money from my old car was spent the following day on the zt. Whatever happens, please be careful, and good luck.
