I think there were 2 different sizes of filter, the earlier being the larger one.

Had my car from new and have checked and washed out the larger type filter in diesel twice, not that it was blocked either time. As it was a company owned car until 118k the garage could have changed it during servicing - I don't have any record of them doing so, but it could well still be the original filter.

Car has now done 297k so the filters can last but probably should be checked more often than I have done!

Yes not only is it original it has never been apart - am well impressed with it. So far MAF, starter motor, cam sensor and top hose connection to radiator have been replaced.

Serviced every 15k and it still doesn't use oil in between services. Had to do a fair bit to the rest of the car though and another new clutch isn't that far off as it looks like the slave cylinder is leaking.

But I have had my money's worth out of it and depreciation is next to nothing now. Still a great car to drive - especially on long runs as its very relaxing.

I doubt techs working in the biggest BMW dealership in Manchester are going to care one way or another whether or not they have to change one service item on scores of vehicles that go through there every week! In fact I'd guess they'd be more interested in making sure the cars they work on don't come back with complaining customers. Plus, both parts costs exactly the same and both are still heavily stocked so can't see any financial benefit for the stores team either.

I go in there quite a lot and they are a helpful and genuine bunch of lads. There are probably few other places that deal with these items in such volume so while it may only be a handful of issues out of hundreds of vehicles, that would be enough to make a mechanic just want to use the old part number that has never caused any problems in the past.

Just think it is worth keeping an eye on rather than just dismissing out of hand

Please please excuse my ignorance, but what is the purpose of a PCV? And what symptoms can be expected when they go wrong?
Thank's in advance.

It collect fine oil mist from the crankcase , filters it and returns it to the sump . If totally blocked it can cause oil to be pushed out the dipstick and can rupture internal seals .

Are'nt the filter kits about a third to a quarter the price of the whole new type housing? Seeing as very few owners would ever own a car long enough to need new pcv filters a second time, I'd guess mechanics want the much cheaper old style filter kit in order to keep the bill down for their customers.

Edit: And the 'spitting oil' thing - isn't that the whole point of the new type of pcv? Rather than getting clogged up with the ****, it falls back down into the crankcase, hence the fact that it lasts 'forever'?

Mr Tomcat - your car should run much smoother if your pcv was as badly blocked as you describe. As flyer says, it is designed to keep the noxious **** (that in old fashioned engines used to be vented straight into the atmosphere) within the engine.
