Fan is not coming on when engine is not running. Apparently from the link, it should do!
Also bootom post of link states that trin switch turns fan on to high speed, this must be the only effect that the trin switch has directly on the fan. The other speed settings are set by the ATC system or the ecm apparently.

I'm not so sure I was even able to put any gas into the system. Like I said, I could not get the gauge to rise in pressure at all with the trigger on the can held down for ages.

But hey, thanks for the reply. I am going to leave it and test out the resistor first, just a darned pity the bumper has to come off!

Having read this post and others on Fan functionality I realise that my cooling fan is running on and off every few seconds on high speed when aircon is on. car is a 54 plate facelift so it looks like I have the resistor problem also.
I still have a couple of months warranty but I did not buy the car locally I will have to see if a local garage will do it under the warranty before tackling the resistor myself.

 I'm amazed Halfords are allowed to sell this stuff.

It sounds just as bad as Radweld and the like (which clog the entire cooling system up)

The chemicals that Aircon engineers use are highly regulated.
Having said that think of all the car smashes that involve the escape of the refrigerant into the atmosphere.

Not so bad granted on newer cars.
