My diesel engine temp seems to hover around 85-86 - is that ok or signs of a failing thermostat? Temp gauge sits at 9 o'clock and doesn't drop at all, but I think it reaches that position at about 75 degrees anyway.

It does normal 9 0'clock reading from 75C to 115C I think the running temp of 85/86C is about right for a diesel, others will confirm. Changed my 1.8 from standard 86C stat to 82C PRT later type and running temp reduced from 94/96C to 87/90C with no reduction in mpg or performance.
