fibre is roughly 10x faster than broadband, uses fibre optic instead of copper

They do Steve into your home, but from the green box back to the exchange you will be on the fast stuff.
I went from a lousy 3mb on broadband and now on average I'm getting around 25mb.
Makes a huge difference when streaming movies off on demand services

Might be time for another phone call and see if someone else knows the deals lol
it doesn't clearly show it when ordering but you should get it at £10, as I said I'm an existing sky customer (TV phone broadband) and got the half price for 6 months

I shall have to enquire about it as well.

If I want to download a movie in HD it takes hours, how much quicker is it,my telephone lines are fed to my bungalow by overhead wires will that make a difference

Use this to check if you can get fibre http://www.superfast-openreach.co.uk/where-and-when/

As for download speeds I can download a typical 20 mins show in about 5 mins, a HD movie in less than an hour

That's odd :S just say about the 6 months half price online and that you know other existing customers that have it and see if they can do it over the phone for you or you will go elsewhere

15 minutes on the phone, then 'Welcome to sky to home of great value and entertainment'.

Explained that I disagree with the value as far as fibre broadband is concerned, then transferred to another department and guess what.... we are busy, we will answer your call within 15 minutes.... Great!
