There is no such thing as programmed death.

Cars have a design life yes. They should last at least this long. But they are not designed to suddenly die after that. Parts will be designed and tested to make sure they last as long as intended, and sometimes this means they only just last that long. That life in miles and years varies by company and model.

Remember the manufacturers reason to improve parts is if it's giving them a problem. First of all if parts fail in warranty, and then to a lesser extent if customers don't come back because stuff fails outside warranty, but still unreasonably early so the cars get a bad reputation. The reason for this: if it isn't in the two previous categories, it doesn't appear on radar. You don't spend time and money fixing things that you don't even know are wrong.

I've just changed the lower mount on my cdt at 144500 miles. The new one was off the shelf from Rimmers. Now I bought the car at 87000 miles, so the part has done at least 60000 miles, maybe even 144500.

I don't think that's bad, particularly when the old one, at a glance, was undamaged. When I took it off and examined it there was a split in the larger rubber, but the thing had by no means disintegrated.

Hopefully it'll be another 7 years before I need to find another one............
