As far as I can see the resistor creates a resistance (doh! it would wouldn't it) and therefore makes the fan run slower. due to design these burn out relatively quickly. so when it has failed there is no longer a path for the current to follow. Again I imagine to test you bridge across the resistor and in effect bypass it. This will them allow fan to run at full speed and prove resistor fault. Alternatively putting a meter across the resistor would show infinate resistance if it was faulty.

Pretty sure it is the resistor thats faulty Gary. Let us know how you go on.

Edit, sorry mate, Almost forgot. As I understand it the fan will come on second higher speed speed if the engine starts to get too warm. but that takes an age with deisels in this weather.

Hope i got all that right, if not then Keith or Jules etc will put me in my place and educate the pair of us but pretty sure thats how it works. I have spent a long time looking through Keiths post on fans when mine failed. The man is a credit to the club.
Ok think ive got that straight in my head now, I don,t use my A/c to be honest (tight scotsman and all that!!), So would i be right in saying that its not the end of the world then, the fact its not working properly at the mo is not going to cause a break down or damage the car ........

The fan is cooling the engine coolant as well as operating with A/C. If your fan does not come on at all then you are in all sorts of trouble.

As GG says, you are currently running on the "back up" of the higher speed fan. If this fails then problems are iminent. Best get it sorted.

Gary,

Small consolation but I'm in exactly the same boat as you. I only checked after reading about fan failure a couple of days ago.

Could have been like it since I bought the car in April for all I know and with winter arrived it's not an immediate problem.

Anyway, I guess it's most likely the resistor so I've just ordered one from Jules.

Let's hope we both get sorted.

Tom

Good question Gary, I'll see what's involved first in getting the bumper off.

Fotunately labour costs still cheaper here so I might take the easy option.

Bought the resistor through ebay so jules probably doesn't even know yet!

Anyway at least it can be sorted without too much hassle and your car does look nice.
