Thanks for all the replies.

He lives in Glasgow and works in Edinburgh (Rosyth) so mostly motorway speeds but the car hasn't moved since it was noticed. Hes pretty convinced it wasn't there the day before as he checked the car after it was washed at a local car wash.

We'll know more once the tyre is removed on Friday and he'll be getting the opposite tyre checked also which was fitted at the same time just in case there is a fault. Ill let you know.

Even zooming in on it it's not clear, but it does look like a tear.

Anyone any ideas what could cause this damage right across the width of the tyre?

If you look at the wheel where the split in the tyre is, you can see a mark on the wheel in line with the split. I suggest he has hit something in the road.

Certainly looks that way, shades of Concord and debris on the runway?

Definitely no mark on the shell as I checked for signs. It looks like a mark, but I think it's one of those wee rubber tags.

I do not think its a tag, it looks to me as though something has hit the rim, and must be something solid to mark the rim in such a fashion right below the cut in the tyre. Hope he can get the tyre company to accept the manufacturing fault though.

Going in even closer it does look like a rubber tag. (vent spew)

The replacement tyre arrived a day early and it was fitted this morning.

The tyre fitter believes this is a manufacturing fault. No sign of external factors or indicators found that would result in a split right across the tyre so a warranty claim is underway and the tyre will be going back to Goodyear for further investigation.

As four tyres were fitted at the same time, I've told my son to keep a close check on the others.

Glad you got it sorted. I have used Goodyear tyres for ever and never had any problems, so I must keep my eyes peeled for anything like that on mine.

Remember this thread?

Well, Goodyear have replied and said the tyre had a manufacturing fault and refunded my son the cost of the tyre.
