The fuel filter clamp itself has a tendency to loosen off, causing the fuel filter to rotate, and place stress on the wiring to the plugs that are connected to it.

The most common fault this throws up is a random engine management light on the dash, along with symptoms you describe.

First check the wiring/ plug to the fuel filter for wear, breaks, fraying etc/

Loosen the fuel filter clamp, and rotate the fuel filter body till the cables on top of the filter show no signs of being under any tension, then tighten well.

Worth a shot, and not hard to do.

Snagger.

And putting the gear lever into 2nd, isn't second gear, it will still pull off in first but won't go any higher than second.
If you want to pull off in second, move the little switch to the snow position.

Hi snagger , similar problem here, just collected cdti from well up Scotland 2 weeks ago and it's just started to "miss" and occasional big flat spot, only when cold, once it clears its off like crazy..... So...... where is the fuel filter? . .. Under back seat like the v6?.... Thanks

Far easier to get to - it sits inboard of the battery box, in front of the under bonnet LP fuel pump if you have one fitted.
