As I understand it, mods originated for the Freelander, which include modified head gasket, spacer rail (can't recall the proper name), plus a few other bits and of course, new 'stretch' head bolts, which should never be reused. The K series engine is an excellent engine which only suffered from a 'marginal' cooling system, with minimal coolant capacity. When the problem first occurs, the fix is usually not done properly, either because of cost, or inexperience. The problems then get worse and finally the owner gives up; easily done in our throw away society.
