Asda have Magnetec on offer, the 1ltr size bottles £3 I believe, might be worth checking your local store to see. I think it was 10-40w, but wouldn't swear to it.

Well a definitive answer would be nice as I've only just put that oil in! I even had the argument with Halfords coz they said I should be using 0W/Something Fully Synthetic and I pointed out what my handbook said.
I don't mind changing it for something else, so what exactly is the recommended Diesel oil for a M47R engine that's done 60k? tnx Nick

I wouldn't worry, I'm sure it's fine with 10W40 in although I don't rate magnatec very highly personally. It's average at best.
Im undecided what oil to put in at the next service. I will ptobably go for a 5W40. It's in the middle of the ranges the handbook says and doesn't require a second mortgage like the 0W stuff. Last edited by rovexCDTi; 26th February 2011 at 10:24.. |

In my handbook the oil is listed on page 191 so they do seem very different if some list it on page 143. Mine is part number RCL 0548EN 3rd Edition, printed 01/2004 and has pictures of facelift MGs on the front.
The real question is did they change the engine in some way, or was it just an update to the oil spec? This does happen, Rover did it for the PG-1 gearbox when bearing failure started to show early on. They changed from EP gear oil to 10w40 engine oil (or MTF-94 for turbos). Wilkinsons sell Carlube 5W40 triple R fully synthetic for £15.73 for 4 litres, so get 2 lots for just over £30. It meets all the specs required.

There isn't really a difference between cheap oils and the more expensive ones except the amount of additives to keep the viscocity within the range for a longer period. They all have to meet the spec stated, so whats the difference.................
Good oils last longer ie more additives that wear out over a longer period of time, so, use cheaper oils by all means but change them earlier. When the additives wear out you are left with a base grade(dirty) oil. What we do not know is what base grade the oil companies use and it differs. It could be that an expensive oil is straight 25 grade with additives. A cheap oil could be 22 grade. That means over time you are running a thinner oil with more possible damage. the cleanliness of the oil and removal of 'bits' is handled by the filter. I have for too many years to mention used cheaper oil and changed it earlier. the most important thing of all is to change it regularly. The older the engine the thicker the oil. 5w30 or thinner is usually for new engines. very worn out engine? Get some 20w50 in it. On its last legs? Get some straight 30 grade in it. |
