If it's just snaps here and there or on holiday etc then a compact digital camera will do because it's small, easy to carry and point and shoot.

If you want to go further and learn a bit more about photography and do more with your camera such as manual shooting, macro photography, night photography, long exposures etc then you will need a DSLR which will allow you to do these things. You'll need. A few accessories too like tripod, filters etc. DSLR cameras can be had quite cheap 2nd hand. Most of my gear is. To begin with, get a lens a camera. My Nikon D90 which is several years old now but still pretty good and my current camera cost 200 but can now be had cheaper. With a lens around 200-250. They're not the easiest of cameras to carry around like your compact Ines because they're quite bulky and heavy but great nevertheless.

I can do all that with this, and it is not a DSLR or bulky.

A DSLR is a great place to start though. I still have my old 12mp DSLR I don't use it but cannot bring myself to sell it.

I would take a look at some of the top selling camera stores, just to get an idea of used prices.
They all sell pre-owned, tested and checked, either trade in`s ex or rental Etc.

Gumtree, eBay, Wexphotographic.com, mpb.com, Amazon.

Some of the few to check out and I've personally used.
