Yes - it was the "active elements" in the existing antenna that I am afraid of.
To be fair the supplied antenna would appear to be quite "unobtrusive" - essentially and long 40cm so sticker to stick along the top left area of the windscreen - a few cms for the edge. Thanks I think perhaps I need to wire it up and place it here and there see what I get ... I now need to figure out how to tell TMC is working when on my drive?!? Many thanks.

Good one! One doesn't need to travel far for a traffic jam now-a-days though

As a PS to this question, I also need to find a suitable point to tap-into a "speed pulse" I need to check if the existingHU loom has this in - I can't recall it does, my next port of call would be behind the IPK??
This kit seems to be quite neat - the GPS is backed up by the speed sensor and a gyroscope to assist the GPS when there is a poor signal , or going through a tunnel etc. I'm going to have fun this weekend!! (I am neglecting the fact that R70 is still losing coolant and I cannot seem to find any trace of it, although I am now trying to systematically target specific hoses etc with the engine warm to see if anything transpires ... )

I'm not sure if you can tap into the speed pulse as it's on the can bus system (ABS) I fitted an after market system to a Nissan Xtrail a few weeks ago and couldnt fit speed pulse for this same reason, I left it disconnected letting it use only the ariel for positioning. Explained to the customer that it might not be as accurate until i could find a solution, he has since been back to say there is no obvious difference to his last car. I have a disc at work which i got from VDO which gives all the best pick up points for speed pulse, i can have a look if 75 is on there on Monday if you dont get sorted before then.

Thanks, if you could double-check that would be great thanks.
In the meantime I have connected to pin 6 of the black (12 way) IPK connector labeled "speed pulse". RAVE says this about the speedo. Speedometer Located on the right hand side of the instrument panel, the speedometer is one of the major analogue dials. The wheel speed signal is hardwired from the ABS ECU (front right wheel speed sensor) which transmits the signal as a digital square wave (39,000 pulses per mile). The IPK translates/calculates and displays the information on an analogue gauge in mph and km/h: Scale is 0 – 150 mph and 0 – 240 km/h. The IPK then transmits the vehicle road speed on the CAN and K-Bus. i.e. as I read it the IPK receives the speed-pulse input and translates it, displays it and distributes it around on the CAN and K-bus. As far as I can see the Alpine unit wants the "raw" speed signal .... we will see I have hooked it up to there, but called it a day today - the system fires up and all is working, but need to tidy everything up and put things away before I go out for a test run tomorrow. Re: The TMC - decided to put up the strip antenna as it is indeed quite unnoticeable as it is. Couldn't get the system to recognise anything though - but that may be as I don't know how to work it - i.e. is TMC "on" all the time or should it only receive anything when there is a relevant message? (traffic queue or the likes?) I will have to test further tomorrow. Looks good though.

PS: Here is a pic of the relevant part of the cct diagram showing the speed-pulse input to the IPK.
