Back in the mid '80's, some relations of mine bought a brand new Land Rover 90 V8 (Arles Blue, IIRC) to use on the farm. It was when LR had recently gone over to coil springs which meant you could sit at the traffic lights, blip the throttle and feel the body tilt - always put a big grin on my face

Best bit though was when the traffic lights changed. Covered in mud and the subsequent scratches and dents from the cows, it'd show an XR3i a clean pair of heels !!

Wait till you experience that astride a 4.5 litre V8 "Iron Horse" motorbike! The thing absolutely terrified me, I didn't even dare put it in gear ...

V8 is the engine of choice for me, as long as we still have fuel to burn I will always have at least one.

The 260 has its faults but as soon as it start it makes me smile.

Can you imagine an Interceptor with a 6?

V8's were invented to make men smile, even non petrol heads will say they sound good.

SWMBO took the 260 out the other evening on her own as she had several large friends to collect. She got back saying'' this is amazing'' I now have to hide the keys.

Straight 6 against a V8 ? It's a no brainier, V8 every time. As nice as a smooth 6 is it's nothing against the sound of a V8

No real experience of V8's in anything!
Had the pleasure of driving my friend's BMW 430D M sport Coupe X Drive diesel yesterday. This is a straight 6 twin turbo and to be honest was a dream to drive, power delivery was spectacular as it produces over 500 torques, gear changing was seamless from the 8 speed auto. I love my V8 and its sound is spine tingling but if you want performance and economy you cant beat a modern Diesel. Think it delivers 258 bhp, 0 to 62 is 5.5 seconds, 50 mpg possable if driven respectfully. .. This is a 42k car think my V8 was around 29/30k back in 2003... The new mustang 5.0 V8 is 35k 0 to 62 in 4.8 and 22 mpg..

No competition there with either 6.3 litre or a 7.2 litre Chrysler V8 producing approximately 300bhp but that was back in the late sixties early seventies.

I would let the wife have the keys so I could go off in the Interceptor.

Maybe not but for me it has to be 2.5 litre engine from the Nissan Skyline R34 GTR, hearing one of these at full throttle is glorious but I do have a love for all the Japanese Sports Cars.

I'd choose a Leyland O.680 inline six cylinder naturally aspirated diesel. Loads of torque and in a Leyland Leopard, loads of noise!

Can't beat the sound of that engine, once heard, never forgotten!

As for cars, the BMW "Senior Six" as fitted to the E32 7 Series. That car was my first RWD car and was amazing!

Rather juicy though; probably used more fuel than the O.680!

I used to own a BMW 335d SE, beautiful engine but the rest of the car was unenspiring. My was was remapped to 300bhp and if you floored the throttle at 80mph it would make the traction light flash. I could only get the mid 30's for fuel economy, it was a 2007 model but I'd still have my MG over it any day, that's my personal feelings on it
