Yes, I followed T Cut's updated version (the second one you refer to). Seemed complicated at first, but if you follow the instructions carefully it's not difficult to do. The computer will only give an average consumption figure from the point it is re-set so to get a reasonably accurate overall figure you need to not keep re-setting it. However, once set you can test its accuracy by continuing the manual brim to brim calculations and re-setting it every time you fill up. That way you can monitor any changes and how the car is performing generally.

My trip actually read under what it was doing by about 5mpg.

I always found the trip computer fuel consumption to be "optimistic".
