Great shot. I see you shot at F6.3 - really sharp but depth of field is shallow. For that shot though just having the just mouth in focus works really well.

Thanks Paul.
I'm quite pleased with it.

Is it to be expected that when you have a shallow depth of field, the bit in focus is really sharp, but that level of sharpness cannot be replicated when using a wide depth of field?

I cannot seem to maintain that sharpness across a whole subject even when shooting at F11.

I guess that's why people do image stacking.

Most lenses are at there sharpest at F5.6 - f8 on a DSLR. Diffraction increases as the aperture becomes smaller and hence the image becomes less sharp.

F11 give a good compromise between depth of field and sharpness

Of course adding flash to the equation complicates matters more because we are trying to use the light from the flash to expose the image not the ambient sunlight. F11 usually darkens the image enough to enable the flash to do most of the illumination but on a bright day in sunlight even f11 may not be small enough to let the flash do it's work.

That looks like a scene straight out of Alien........I would have dropped the camera and legged it if that had loomed large in my viewfinder

It's a scary looking thing isn't it!!

Do you think they're it's teeth or something else in its mouth??

I'm loving macro. Just making the most of it while there's an abundance of insects..

Hahaha!
You are right. It does look evil.

Even closer to your "Alien" comment, apparently it lays it's eggs in other insects who then hatch and feed off the "host" and then fly away!!

I found this little bloke in my garden earlier...

I have no idea why or how he got there... My garden is gravelled.

I suspect he hitch hiked back from the garden centre when we bought some flowers on Saturday...

Good morning Phil, it looks as though you have got the hang of macro work? I have an aversion to photographs of spiders ever since the poisonous spider bite into the balls 3 years ago in South Africa. Apart from that, insect photography is fascinating.

Ouch!! I don't even want to think how much that hurt!

Thanks Phil, I'm still exploring how my new lens works, I think I'm getting there though.

I will persevere!
