No we didn't get it. £7 a day, which was a lot of money in 1969. We were told it wouldn't be fair to give us it when other British troops in Cyprus didn't get anything like it so they only gave us the LOA (less than 10 bob a week). The Government probably made a profit out of us. Even the Irish mob got it, although they could only draw half of it whilst out there and the rest was kept for when they got back home.

Sounds familiar. I was there in 72/3. They said though that it was part of the UN deal not to pay us. And as you say we just got the extra bob becuse we were -roughing it- (ie we didn´t pay the usual part of our pay for food)

I had a nice 6 months though. My first encounter with the Finnish Nation. Thought I´d need a liver transplant after being -invited- over to their bar in Nicosia

I did 93 days ...... just long enough to get a medal.

The Swedes did it for me. They threw money (in the form of booze) around like confetti.

Got my gong mounted on the wall along with the -toubles award- and the first Gulf War thingy (the Swdish -General Hospital- was given it by the Brits for turning up on time- We were in Riyadh, 500 km from the action)

The Swedes don´t usually talk to each other unless the promille content in the blood is around 1 to 1.5

Got to go feed his lordship........

I have a new stupid plan!

I'm going to go get my old Honda Civic (´86) out of storage and hopefully get it going and MOT'd in time for an 80's car meet just outside Stockholm on September 18th.
What do you lot reckon it will need doing? Do I have to change the cam belt after it has been standing for so long? The brakes are probably seized and I'm quite sure the petrol (the tank was full...) is of no use. The car was in daily use up until August 2008, and it has been dry-stored since.

Still, my father-in-law thought it would be nice so he's joining me Not that much driving, maybe 400 km's one way + an overnight ferry crossing.

Take the cover off sufficiantly to have a look at the belt. Turn it over and see if it´s fraid or cracked. When was it last done. How many kms has it done since the last change?

The belt was probably changed something like 10 years ago. Maybe 20 or 30,000 kms. So I guess the age limit is up...

5 years or 60,000 miles from memory on those. Easy job providing you can get the crank pulley undone!
