Signed - many thanks for posting this.
It is unfortunate that so much ignorance re diesels has been expressed lately. Cheers,

Re MG John. That is the point of my Petition. It is not about the rights and wrongs of diesel or petrol, it is the unfairness of these changes. As soon as things are said by the 'experts' on this or that, the vultures circle, looking for a few more easy pickings. Industry rubs its hands with the thought of all the new cars it will sell, politicians look at yet another indirect tax opportunity and the environmentalists look forward to a few more years of cushy employment.
It might be diesel this time, but as sure as eggs are eggs, another little ruse to fleece the motorist will be along shortly. And that is why we need to stick together and fight these issues. We are a club for 75 and ZT enthusiasts; we might prefer an MG to a Rover, or a petrol, as opposed to a diesel, but it is the cars and their future that we should be protecting. The Petition still hasn't reached 500. I wonder how many diesel owners there are in the club? It must be in the thousands. Roverite. |

It is now at 463.
I have contacted 16 of the larger 'car clubs' that will have a large base of diesel owners (although pre 2006 petrol cars are affected as well), which should improve coverage. Diesel Car magazine has an article on this subject in their October issue and they are publishing my E-mailed letter, quoting the petition, in their next issue. The Editorial position is similar to some of the posts on here, ie., it is a bit of political scaremongering by Boris and Co, to cosy-up to the 'environmentalists' in the electorate, prior to the 2015 election. That may be, but we often see things bandied about and think nothing will happen, but they are testing our reaction; before you know it, you have a new 'rule'. Roverite. |

Well I've listened to the Costing the Earth programme and to be honest it wasn't all that one sided. It did mention the skewing of purchasing due to tax policy based upon only one pollutant. It also mentioned that the latest diesels are on paper cleaner but in reality not due to the way the lab figures are created.
It also mentioned how the most modern diesels with dpf are now doing the regeneration cycle in town rather than out on the motorway so basically are not that useful. It also mentioned that 40% of particulates are from Diesel engines. Interestingly on Inside Science this afternoon they also did a short piece on this and mentioned in passing that Oxford Street in London has the highest figure but also that it is only busses and taxis as cars are banned from that road. In conclusion BoJo etc are aiming at the wrong target (again)! |
