For the birds it works well Jeff. The fact that the pics load directly to the PC is great. I can edit them and check focus etc whilst still taking pictures (2 screens help here)

I think tethered gets used a lot for studio work for the same reason. You can take the pic and instantly edit/review it on a pc. If only I had a studio

Indoor macro work could work well.

We had a couple of hours sunshine this morning so I set up for tethered capture as per above.

Got these. They have a bit more pop when the sun is out.

Thanks Jeff.

For anyone interested here is a screen grab of my two monitors when I am set up to take pics of the birds.

Note this is a mock up as I have not got the camera on the tripod with the cable attached.

On the left monitor is Lightroom where I can view and edit the pictures as they are taken.

On the right is the live view via the tablet and the remote camera control window. You can see tripod, bird feeders, and post with stick attached.

When a bird lands on stick - take pics at 11 frames per second - then edit in Lightroom - works well.

Not great weather today so I played around with my close up set up . (for insects)
This is how I am setup at the moment

I am going to mount my 2nd flash under the camera attached to the tripod mount screw hole thingy.

I was going to explain my thinking in this post but it turned into such a long and complicated ramble I will link here instead
http://macroshooting.com/The_need_for_Flash.htm
Reading all on this site will explain a lot about bug photography.

Today I tried using 2 flashes and varied the settings and I think 2 flashes can work well.

If I set up the camera as intended but turn off the flashes the picture will turn out almost black.
If I use one flash the subject will expose correctly but shadows from the flash can spoil the image.
I am hoping 2 flashes fired from different angles will fill some shadows and produce a more pleasing picture.

Without flash the pictures are almost dark, this means the exposure is almost entirely from the flash. Flash duration is very short say 1/1000 sec to 1/15000 sec. This helps freeze action.

Waiting for the connectors now to attach 2nd flash to underside of camera.

On another note here is a pic I had paid little attention too but as I was messing around today I gave it a second look. (nothing to do with bug pics)

I salute you with the macro photography and your experimentation with lighting Paul

Looking forward to seeing your results as the little I have tried it is a whole new ball game of skills and patience

Thanks Jeff and Phil.

Today's shot is just a simple hand held effort. (With a bit of flash)

These puffballs erupt overnight and can make good eating I believe. Not that I have tried.

I went out today to get some insect pics. You can see by the sky that it was not the best weather for insects. So I took this of a thistle. (plus 2 crops)
