Just been playing at editing some photos.

Needs a bit more polishing but hopefully you can see the difference

No I didn't work in the mines I worked for a company that were contracted to the NCB, It was up Rich's neck o the woods, Boyles Bro's onshore Drilling company of Newcastle.

We did the drilling for the opencast sites from the early to mid 1970's primarily around Durham & north Wales, Cumbria. those geological guys at the NCB knew exactly where all the coal seams were & how thick they were down to a yard or so.

The drilling rig was like a multi-wheeled missile carrier with a 60 foot derek, it was probably converted from one back in those days, It was a scary job getting it onto a low-loader when we changed site.

We drilled down to the seam to confirm coal then lifted the drill rods & drilled again around a yard from the original, that was core drilled to collect the thickness of the seam in core samples.

Your right Phil I don't miss it at all, It was real heavy work & we went through workers who couldn't manage it on a weekly basis, Almost every Monday we had to put job vacancies in the local employment offices wherever we were. It was a filthy job.

My missus went to all the jumble sales whilst I was away to get work clothes or anything that fitted me, there was a lot of military clothes in jumble sales back then, RAF great coats were a prize warm coat back then. after every shift you had to burn them in the brazier, you couldn't take them back to the digs or dry them, you were soaked through with wet black mud everyday.

Even though the job was tough I enjoyed the job though, we had digs in some great farms/pubs, met some marvelous people too.
My grandfather and some uncles worked down the pits of South Wales, hard times and they had bad lungs. I can't remember them wearing great coats, but do remember the collieries being filthy looking places. Ian, you have led a very interesting life

Morning all - back home, back in the groove, back on the silly-o'clock school run - catch you later, probably after I have been shorn. I haven't had a haircut for 6 weeks, so I look a bit like a Highland Cow - well, bull actually
