No any fuel pressure disappears after 10 seconds of engine off.
I find it far easier & quicker to remove inlet manifold, leaving starter in place.

Indeed they did.
Kestis hasn't replied to any questions since so we don't know if his solution lasted

This removes the power from the ECU & hence the fuel regulator.
If the whine stops immediately, (but engine still rotating without power) you know its fuel resonance.
Perfect, I will try this today.

Did we establish that the sound seems to originate on the drivers side? Im sure I read a couple of people suggesting it..?

EDIT:- I should add, I only get the noise when its warm too... from a cold start and in cold weather, its silent as a mouse.....

Yes and HP Reg is on drivers side!
But resonance travels and can appear to be coming from elsewhere.

Bit like the common fault of Tourers with roof resonance at 1800 RPM, which we all thought originally was rear exhaust silencer!!

Went down a long hill in 2nd gear..

Kept the revs high.. Wailing was there.

The instant the ignition was turned off, wailing stopped.

I get the feeling that if it had been an alternator or tensioner, the noise would still have continued.

In addition, the pitch would go up and down with the engine, this wailing/droning stays the same pitch no matter what.

Hence my "tuning fork" description.

Id love to get rid of it, it ****** does my head in. Under the bonnet though, with the engine cover on, it really does seem like its coming from the drivers side.. of this there is no doubt. But we all know how hard it is to trace sounds!

just a quick response on this, I had my HP pump replaced with a second user 2002 pump. Whine has ceased. My pump was leaking though so needed to be done however getting rid of the whine is a nice bonus.

Strange - mine only appeared when I replaced the HP pump!
