I've been playing around with some older pictures I took of the night sky in an attempt to see what better results I could get now I'm a bit more confident with the editing....

A couple of good shots of Orion Phil. The latest version shows a few more stars which I think looks better.
It is always a balancing game of shutter speed and ISO. I see you used a shutter of 30 sec at ISO 400, so good noise control but the stars just start to elongate due to earth rotation. You can of course shorten shutter speed to reduce elongation but noise will increase. Great shot!! Last edited by Rocket; 16th July 2018 at 06:31.. |

This was a shot I took in Ireland last year. At the time I was only using the raw editor function of photoshop. The photoshop side I didn't really know how to use! I think if I'd have used ISO800 or dare I say it ISO1600 the shot may have been better in this case as I wouldn't have had to have a 30 second shutter speed. But, its all a learning curve! The shot I took last week in Shropshire I used ISO128000 and it was incredibly noisy. Next time I will take some pictures at differing ISO's and see how they come out.

I do wonder how much of an improvement I would see if I upgraded to an 800D with its higher resolution sensor.
I wonder if noise control would be better. I did start to look at second hand 6Dmark2 but at around £1000 for a second hand camera, it's a bit of a gamble.

Higher resolution in it's self will not produce better noise control but going full frame would. Full frame is usually better by about one stop over APS-C so you could half your ISO or shutter speed. (not both) Of course this assumes the sensors are equally as good at handling noise and just the sensor size changes. In fact sensors vary in their ability to handle noise. Pixel density will affect the noise also so sensors with large pixels and a lower pixel density tend to be better handling noise. So in fact having a higher megapixel count may well increase noise slightly (all other things being equal, which it never is lol) Last edited by Rocket; 16th July 2018 at 08:36.. |

I want a full frame, it's just the cost is quite daunting and I'm not sure I can justify it. My camera is 18 megapixel. So From what you've said, (which makes sense) a newer crop sensor may have worse noise!

As we loved Porthcawl so much, we went back there yesterday. Only for about 1 1/2 hours.... (We have dogs, so can't leave them for too long.) We are in love with the place and moving there seems to have been given the green light by SWMBO...
