40D died miserably in an old mill I was climbing about in. I'd been looking for a semi pro replacement for the 30D and had decided to either go for the 7D or wait a while for a 5D MkII as my lenses are FF anyway with the exception of the Tokina 11-16mm. I just came across an old Nikon D5000 with the 18-105 VR lens for £160 so snapped it up. Wasn't really looking for one but I did enjoy my old D70s I had from new. The difference in noise between the semi-pro 30D and the budget D5000 is worlds apart. You can really tell the sensor technology has really moved on when viewing 100% crops in CS. |

Thanks for that Alan,
It's always interesting to see how you obtain results and I'm mighty impressed with that macro shot using a non Dslr camera How do you find the handling of the Nikon compared to the Canon bodies?

Personally I find they feel a bit more robust than the Canons, with a chunkier grip and more rubberised where you need the support.
That said, I loved my 40D and 30D for their comfort levels. The EOS 1 is a very big camera but i'm so used to it's bulk anything smaller feels a little cheap anyway. I'm still on the lookout for a 5D, the Nikon is a nice little camera to take out for the day for simple snaps, shows etc but i'm not bonding with it enough to call it my weapon of choice. That title has to go to my EOS 3 with booster pack, though 10fps on film can get expensive if you don't nail it. I also find the Canon wireless flash system much easier to set up, control and edit on the go as opposed to the CLS system of the Nikons. It's easy to take a few slave flash out on a shoot in some abandoned mill and get studio lighting with such a compact system. |

Just to add to the kit bag and also to recommend to others.
I've just got hold of the new Sigma 18-35 1.8 art lens, It's a cracker with lovely bokeh and pin sharp even when wide open

Just taking up this hobby tbh, but my kit is
Fuju Film HS10 Bridge Camera And Fuji Film f50fd, which is a great little point and squeeze, I've been very impressed with it, and its quite customizable, with regards to turning things off and taking raw images. As soon as I can sort out how to speed up uploading to flikr, I will post a couple of snaps from the f50fd, I took when I first bought it |

Going to take a look at your camera on Steve's Digicams in a minute, Really useful site by the way I wouldn't worry about shooting in Raw unless you are going to be spending time editing. Raw files are great but require a bit of post production to really make them pop! For the most part, jpegs are fine and will speed up your camera as Raw files are large and require more resources from the camera. Once you really get the bug then you can always bracket and take Raw and jpegs of the same shot. Maybe worth trying Photobucket as well for a quick and easy way to host photos for forum use Ps, it's in the post
