I am not sure that I'd bother buying another steering wheel - unless of course you wanted a wood-effect or different colour. To put cruise into a standard wheel is actually very simple (and I am presuming that the Rover wheel is almost identical in construction to the MG wheel shown below)
The self tapping holes in the wheel centres are already there - all you need do is cut a slot for the switch to fit in the rear cover. To get the template for the shape, use the ICE control: take a bit of card, draw around the profile of the slot, and transfer this to the other side, and then get brave with a craft knife and an electric drill! This will certainly be my approach when I eventually track down a cruise control loom! |

New wheel
The reason I changed mine was that the car's done 110000 miles, and the steering wheel was very shiny. Found one on ebay for £14 that had been replaced by a wooden one, when almost new. Also replaced the pedal rubbers for the same reason.

Thanks John
I've found a car (Andy pointed me in the right direction). Unfortunately for me, it's near Sheffield. But it will have the control loom, because it has cruise control fitted! Unfortunately, the guy breaking it won't remove the loom for me right now, as it isn't worth the labour time to disassemble the dash. Hurumph. Two options: 1. Wait until the car has been stripped of its dashboard and then ask him again to remove the loom where there is rather less work to do. 2. Go up there myself and take the loom out. I offered to do this last week end - the last week end for about 4 weeks that I am able to do this due to work commitments, and predictably, the guy was away that weekend. Frustrating is not the right word!!! So it looks like option 1 for the foreseeable future then. I don't suppose there is a club member in the area (Chesterfield) who wouldn't mind a bit of a brain teaser task with a set of spanners and wire snippers? |
