Default clio not starting- yes I know its not a 75 but...

some of you guys may be knowledgable on other makes or point me in the right direction.

2000 Xreg 1.2 clio, 50,000 miles.
has spells of engine turning over but not starting, after a few tries it will eventually start, petrolly smell, so Im suspecting lack of ignition.
Its just had a £150 service to sort this out, but is no better.

any ideas guys, or just take it back to the garage ( I will be ringing them tomorrow anyway) ??

done a bit of googling- looks like its going to be the crank sensor (£30).
anyway its going into the garage that serviced it to have its fault codes read.

couldnt resist having a play tonight. Ive removed the crank sensor, cleaned it, and checked it for an ac voltage output when the car was cranking. there was an output there and with the connector to the ECU disconnected the car wouldnt start.

contact cleaned and reconnected the ecu connector and it fired up straightaway, the poor tickover seems to be cured also.

Ill keep my fingers crossed that its cured, even though its booked into the garage its a pain not knowing if its going to start or not

Default While the Clio thread's open...........

MB, would you know if the 1.2's the same as the 1.4 16v with regard to the speedo sensor at the gearbox end? I've tried to find it on SWMBO's 2000 reg 1.4, and even though I've got the Haynes, I still can't find it. Speedo works for about a mile when setting off then stops. Seems to me to be an iffy connection.

Thanks

malcolm

Thanks, David, yes I'm a member on there, and they've posted photos for me, but still can't find it. I'm going to take the front wheels off today to see if it's on the ABS sensor a la 75, as Renault did this on some.

Thx

malcolm

I had a friend of mines 51 Plate 1.2 Clio in for exactly this problem!!
A common fault on these is the flywheel pickup sensor. You dont have to crawl underneath like some!
It's just above the gearbox housing, 2 bolts and 2 wire plug to undo.

I replaced the sensor 6 months ago & so far touch wood it's been OK.
They are about £20

thanks all for the replies, Ive forced myself to take the clio out and about today insted of the ZT, and it seems to have a new lease of life, starting fine and "plucking" under accelleration, and lumpy tickover gone.

cant believe it really, as the sensor wasnt that dirty, but at cranking speeds the output voltage is only a few hundred mllivolts, so I suppose a bit of dirt may go a long way !!
