Unhappy Smoke misfire and a 300 mile recovery - HELP

Hi folks,

On my way to Cornwall on the A30 on Tuesday night when white smoke came from the exhaust. Could not see thru it it was so bad.

The engine then died.

The AA recovered my car back home and looking at it on my return the smoke smells of fuel.

I can start the engine but as soon as I put my foot on the accelerator the engine slows almost as though the fuel mixture is too rich.

The fuel light has just come on before the smoke started.

I cannot drive the car anywhere.

Any ideas what the problem could be?

Oil levels and water levels seem OK. Had a new uprated HG fitted in May and recovery contractor initial said it was HGF but I'm sure it isnt.

Any recommendations of garage to getting it fixed at in the Wallington, Surrey area?

Many thanks

Andy

Hi, you say it smells of fuel, could it possibly be burnt oil you are smelling? Maybe the turbocharger is at fault? When you were turning it over to start it, did it sound any different to usual?

Hello,

The engine sounds no different, no rattles or anything. Definitely smells of fuel although seems to be oily deposits in the exhaust pipes.

Cheers

dont know what fitters you have on a 1.8 turbo,
but I had lots of white smoke on a diesel,
which was down to dity fitters and pvc vale,
never worked on 1.8 turbo.
so cant say it you have more fitters on them then a 1.8 n/a engine.

I like it Phil. The white smoke may be steam from the turbo's coolant supply.

Might speed things up if you try and source one as well. Garages can take a while to source parts. Are they looking for a used or new one?

My sympathy. Sounds almost identical to mine - HGF followed rapidly by turbo failure. You are looking at the thick end of £1k for the repairs by the sound of it, depending on recon / new turbo and how much cleaning up is required in the peripherals.

Good luck with the fix.

Regards

Dave
