Default Vista home basic recovery

my daughter dropped her laptop and as such is no longer recognising there is a hard drive, i know the laptop is fine because if i put the H/D from my sons identical laptop in it boots up ok.
now my question is this
i can easily obtain a new H/D but the problem i have is i have no recovery cd and the recovery was on a seperate partition on the drive that has gone down, does anyone know how i can get vista onto the new drive?

as i said my son has an identical laptop, do you think its possible i could make a recovery cd on his laptop and use it to reinstall vista on my daughters
failing that i will have to put ubuntu or linux on but that seems a waste when i have a perfectly good licence for vista
any help or advice is appreciated

Jon, all you need is a new hard drive. Using a recovery CD of another notebook is possible, if the hardware is mostly identical. The licence key for Vista is printed on a label, usually located underneath, so it's absolutely legal.

If the other notebook creates a recovery CD with an included licence key of that other PC, you won't have to type it during installation. Then you should change the key later on using the activation wizard. Don't hesitate to ask, if you need more information.

Hi Jon, you are correct in that you can create the restore cd's from the other identical laptop you have and restore to your daughters laptop.

If you are asked to input the license key then as Jurgen stated you just need to input the key on your daughters laptop and it is perfectly legal.

If you get stuck with anything you are welcome to drop me a mail ( I have worked with I.T. on a technical level for 17 years).

Cheers
Lee.

I'll bet that licence code doesn't work.

If the recovery disks are created from an identical laptop then the licence key from the original laptop (the one that the HDD is to be replaced) will indeed work as the recovery media used on both identical laptops will be the same OEM installation.

What you won't be able to do is use the licence key from the laptop you are creating the media disks from as that will be already activated to that laptop.

If you get stuck then give me a shout as I am a Microsoft accredited engineer (MCSE).

Cheers
Lee.

Lee is correct, my daughters new HDD arrived today and after creating a factory settings backup dvd on my sons laptop it was plain sailing and installed perfectly,
with regards to the licence key all i had to do was go to system properties and change the product key as previously described on here and activated it straight away

Thanks for the help to all that offered advice

The licence keys do not not necessarily work as HP etc use bulk licence keys. Anyway i'm glad yours did.
