Overheating

Hi all got a problem with overheating on my diesel tourer the temperature is fluctuating between halfway and three quarters on the temp gauge the fan is cutting in at high speed and bringing back to normal any advice would be very welcome thanks Sean

Yon do not mention what you have done to sole the problem and so I can only offer advice which you may have already done have you checked the water level?

It only happened on a journey to Devon yesterday I am going to check levels after breakfast although coolant level was ok as I recently checked it the car does stand for long periods not sure if the stat can jam closed !!!

Turn on the ignition or start the engine from cold and press the windscreen demist button. Now get out of the car and walk to the radiator grille and listen carefully. Can you hear the radiator fan running continuously?

Hi Simon yeh the fan is ok I recently fitted a new gold fan resistor and the fan was cutting in ok yesterday just checked coolant and level is ok I have had the car for 19 years now and it’s never had a coolant change or flush wondering if I need to do that, thanks for your help Sean

When you check the coolant in the header tank, make sure there is not to much in, you only need it just above the max mark.

Make sure the coolant is correct drive it and if the temp rises open up the heating to full and see if it goes down.

That's very good advice from Arctic there Sean. With the expansion tank cap removed you should be able to read the 'MAX' tab but not the 'MIN' tab below it.

Was it a hot day when you travelled to Devon with the air conditioning on? Were you towing?

Hi guys thanks for the replies will check the level in the morning when cold went out today about 12 miles away and was fine just pooling coming back I booted it a bit up hills and the temp rose to three quarters again seems to be mainly when I put my foot down a bit trouble is I do enjoy that re map from years ago ����

That sounds like an air lock Sean. Try draining and refilling the cooling system following the MG Rover procedure exactly.

If your coolant hasn't been changed in 19 years, then you are driving with water in the cooling system, possibly the antifreeze has lost all its anticorrosion properties leading to blockages.
I would check the temperature of the coolant using the diagnostics on the car, this way you will be certain as to the actual coolant temperature when the temp dial in the car is going up and down.
I would also as a matter of priority change the coolant and flush the system thoroughly before refilling, then test again as above, by the way you should remove the engine block plug at the back of the engine to ensure ALL the old cooland drains out.
