Default If you had approx £1500-2000 to spend on a runabout..

A daily drive type of car, what would you consider?

Can't be a cheap R75/ZT either!

Needs to be cheapish to insure, eccomical. Something with a bit of performance & something not too small.

Want to stay clear of anything with a K Series 4 pot engine.

Dead simple that.. 1999 Honda Civic VTi - Honda's just go on, and on, and on without and problems, and the B18 VTEC in the makes a good 170BHP in standard form - It's effectively the engine out of an Integra in a 5 door hatch. They shift pretty quickly, and you can pick one up with FSH, Leather and a few toys for £1700..

Unless.. You also want economy, then you have to spend between £600 -- £800 on a Cit ZX Volcane 1.9D turbo (diesel.)..

The XUD engine is simple extremely reliable and there are some very fine examples of the ZX around for next to no money.

They'll sit on 80+ all day, every day. change the oil Filters and coolant when required and they will go forever, run a few well over 250,000

O.K. they won't win any prizes for being flash, but if economy is your thing then you won't go far wrong. (between 40 and 50 MPG )

I seem to recall driving a Xantia with a 1.9TD engine once.. Was remarkably good!

Have you looked at the Rover 200 series diesels? I had one for a year or two and it was very cheap to run and had a bit of poke once the turbo kicked in.

You can pick them up for peanuts now.
