Black smoke
My Dad has a 54 plate 75 contemporary 2.0l cdti 135 and whenever you put a bit of pressure on the accelerator a cloud of thick black smoke comes out the back. It has covered 144k miles, I've connected the obd2 reader and it comes back with no faults. What can this be, and is there a solution??

Easiest place to start would be to check it's not blowing past the intercooler 'O' rings. I'm sure others will be along soon with more in depth things to check.

Open the bonnet and have a look around the N/S headlamp area, If there is an oily mist covering the area It is normally because the intercooler seals have popped out.

Aside from checking the aforementioned o-rings, may also be worth checking, cleaning and then disabling the EGR. The amount of soot and oily gunk that collects in both the EGR and inlet manifold, will not help the smoke situation. (wear very old clothes to clean it)
Disable by removing and blocking the vacuum pipe that activates it.

Also don't forget the simple things....... air filters get soggy and blocked at this time of year. Low revs OK but needs more air at higher revs.

Can the MAF sensor cause an issue?
The reason I ask is all the above has been carried out on mine, PCV filter / Air filter / Fresh oil and oil filter / EGR and inlet manifold cleaned out / No issue with the intercooler seals, all good as gold at the moment. But, every now and then on acceleration, it will chuck out a big cloud of black smog. (I'm saving it up to send to Greta) I've been told the MAF isn't doing much, but the car feels like it's driving OK to me. I just wondered if this might be an issue?

Correct me if im wrong to get less smoke you need more air to combust so it burns fuel more cleanly. Iv changed all above and mine is ok. EGR was my problem but yours could also be a blocked inlet manifold. Do 75s suffer from lazy turbo and does th re map brings it on sooner so more air..? Oh and renew fuel filter..

That's how my EGR looked before a good soak in traffic film remover!
